2011 Race Results

“I run because I can, I run because others can't,
I run because others need a voice, I run in hope that someday others can run with me,
I run because someday I may need someone to run for me.”

I ran my first marathon, the 2011 Coeur d'Alene Marathon in 4:00:27. (Age Group 19/33, Overall 171/503) I ran for St. Jude. I ran for Todd Lederer, Maggie Tinker, Dylan Pospisil, Seth Plunkett, and Doug Brown.
I ran for fighter/survivors Melbe Friedrichsen, Chris White, Vicki Lane, Patti Gahagan, and Robert Miller.
I am a St. Jude Hero and raised nearly $4,000 for St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.

Long Bridge Swim Sandpoint ID 8/6/11 by kuvinnie at Garmin Connect - Details

Long Bridge Swim Sandpoint ID 8/6/11 by kuvinnie at Garmin Connect - Details
I was encouraged to do this swim by my insurance agent Brian Goetz. I had thought about needing
a long open water swim to get under my belt. So I signed up and glad that I did. Had no idea how
long it would take, but I targeted 1:15. Felt good in the open water for the length of the bridge. My wife
and daughters were strolling along the pedestrian bridge and I was able to get their attention. Was nice
to have them cheering me across the lake. As the swim transitioned into a channel to the finish, I started
to feel some motion sickness. Felt I was going to get sick in the water, not sure what from. Exertion, tired,
waves, I am not sure what it was....I slowed down considerable at the end and did enough to hit the beach.
Exhausted at the finish, I was excited to my family waiting for me. A nice sense of accomplishment and
very glad that I have "jumped in" to the swimming portion of the TRI. And the Long Bridge Swim came
with a T-shirt, so it makes it fun. Next up Coeur d'Alene TRI on August 13th!

Gozzer Ranch Speed Golf by kuvinnie at Garmin Connect - Details

Gozzer Ranch Speed Golf by kuvinnie at Garmin Connect - Details
A fun way to play golf. Alternate hole and run from tee to green. Partner drives
cart to get your yardage and new club and you keep going. We thought that we killed it, but
we finished in 64 minutes and shot a 94. The winning team was faster and better.
We place 4th out of 5.

Race the River 7/24/11

Race the River 2010 was my first triathlon that I competed as an individual. In years past I had been apart of team triathlons. I remember being very nervous about the swim during the 2010 race and ended up doing respectable doggie paddle to finish under 20 minutes in the swim. My transitions were decent for a first timer but I knew that the 2011 race would be different.
After finishing the summer season in 2010, I committed to running the CDA Marathon in May 2011 to see if my body could withstand the training needed to complete Ironman CDA in 2012. Also, I needed to upgrade bicycles to compete in Tri events, thanks to Bob and Shane at Two-Wheeler in Hayden, ID. The guys at Two-Wheeler go above and beyond to take care of their customers.  Also I decided that my 10 yr old surfing wetsuit wasn't the easiest to get in an out of in a hurry. So I upgraded to an Xterra Tri wetsuit. The wetsuit for me gives me buoyancy, by helping my legs float which keeps me from plowing the water.

Working on the swim was also a priority this year because my respectable doggie paddle won't cut it in the IMCDA 2.4mi swim. I took lessons from Mike Hamm during the winter and enrolled in a Tri specific course at the Kroc Center CDA. Worked on technique with Derek Garcia from the Kroc Center who is also a pro triathlete who competes in IM competitions everywhere.
After completing the CDA Marathon over Memorial Day weekend 2011, I really haven't running consistently. My focus has been the swim and bike. I guess after knowing that I could do a marathon, I knew that I should focus on the other parts of my training.
Another focus of my training has been nutrition. My wife knows how to cook and we have always eaten healthy meals, but I began researching endurance nutrition. After talking with my buddy Johnny Ukich who is a pediatric dentist I confirmed the choice of using Hammer Nutrition for my athletic adventures. In talking to Johnny, who competes on the bicycle and has done IMCDA. He told me the story about his training for IMCDA a few years ago. He had never had a cavity(he is a dentist)and had 11 cavities after training for IMCDA because he was drinking sugary healthy drinks. He told me about Hammer products and I knew that I was on the right track. Started using the Hammer Heed and Gels for my marathon training.
Well, enough rambling for today. But I do want to share my results with you from my 2 attempts at Race the River at Riverston in Coeur d'Alene from 2010 and 2011.
It shows you what you can expect from your first tri and then if you put some effort towards your next.
Anything is possible. Bring it.

3 mi OFK Run

Untitled by kuvinnie at Garmin Connect - Details

Run started in a mist and ended with a nice Nebraska Sunset. Running 5 miles seems like a bit of a jog after all the marathon mileage from earlier in the year. Putting in some run miles to get ready for the Race the River Sprint Tri next weekend. Hopefully I can get some good pool time and then focus on some bike miles next week. Looking forward to beating my time from last year in the RtR of 1:26:57. Depends on T1, but I think I could shave 10 minutes with a new bike and wetsuit. Fingers crossed.

Bring it

At work today, I found myself looking at finish times from last years Race the River 2010.
After running a marathon in early 2011 and now focusing my energy on #IMCDA 2012 I am measuring up my fitness current, and where I want to be.

Traveling throws a big hurdle into the mix, especially when I am used to 70 degree run temps and stuck in 105 heat index places. Just have to remember to Bring It, though.
